On April 11th, members from 4 parties participated in the 1st training workshop of ISTEP project The workshop focused on improving members’ skill of communicating with exchange students and helping them solve some problems while they’re in Vietnam. All the participants were divided into 6 groups, with 2 teaching assistants (TA) for each one. Teaching assistants were members who have experiences in working with foreigners. As students to students, friends to friends, it was easier to talk, find out what was missing and help each other out. In the 1st session, with an inspiring presentation by Mr. Nguyen Phuc Binh, current leader, participants got to know more about ISTEP project. Before the workshop, members only knew about ISTEP project and its activities through announcements by the steering committee, which consists of representatives from 4 parties. During this session, they had the chance to ask questions freely and directly towards the leader. Therefore, they could understand fully the purpose and mission of ISTEP project. After every questions had been answered, came the 2nd session, the first part of training process. In this one, TA played the roles of exchange students. The others, considering TA as actual foreigners, said hi, made friend with them and offered to help them deal with their problems. By this way, TA had an overview on how the members act when they first meet a foreigner. After that, TA showed each participant what they need to notice, for example which questions they should avoid to ask, some gestures they should not do in the very first meet,...etc. Participants were also provided some basic information in English about Hanoi, Vietnam as well as places in HMU and the area nearby. For the 3rd session, participants in each group were divided into smaller groups of 2 or 3. They played different roles and practiced themselves under the supervision of TA. When they had any problem, TA helped them by sharing their own experiences and thoughts, showing them what they should do in those particular situations. After such a joyful and exciting workshop, participants have gained a lot of useful information in order to improve their skills. On the other hand, TA also learned many things from the participants. Hopefully, with enthusiastic members, the ISTEP project will continue to develop and be able to help more exchange students in the future.
