1A alley, only a few minutes of walk from Hanoi Medical University, is an ideal place for eating and shopping. It is extremely well-known for teenagers around Hanoi due to mass eye-catching stores along the street.
You can find almost everything there such as clothes, bags, glasses, stationery, and souvenirs are the most dominant products. It is undoubtedly worthy to spend time choosing beautiful traditional gifts for your friends back home. Besides, it’s a deficiency if not talking about food here. This alley is famous for its various snacks, not surprisingly; many people come here for their late afternoon meal and all the street vendors always busy for serving their “Gods”. If you stay Viet Nam for a long time, and interested in cooking by yourself, you should take in mind that 1A alley has a market too. There are so many things for your choice: meat, living fish, many kind of seafood, fresh vegetable, seasonal fruit and especially spices (both traditional spices and spices of some other countries like India, China, Thailand,etc)
I also recommend you to buy seasonal vegetables because they are cheaper and the farmers use fewer pesticides for them. And of course, let’s call for your Vietnamese friends, they will help you to choose the most delicious ones, they can also teach you to cook some Vietnamese food. Believe me, our foods are extremely fantastic.
Things to remember
You should keep in mind several points when spending time in 1A alley. Firstly, most shops open at about 9.am and if you do not want to be drowned in the crowd, you should visit it in the morning. Secondly, pavements in 1A alley are narrow, therefore it better to leave your motorbikes at home or park them at Hanoi Medical University if you do not want to get struggle with the parking issue. Finally, although you have might heard about bargaining in Vietnam, you might not need to do that when looking for goods inside shops. In fact, the prices of all products have been posted on the shelters already.
And one last thing, there are still many dishes we want to introduce to you, like fried snail in the first turning point of 1A, Tao Pho inside the market. They are also delicious, but for some people, they are not “fit their stomach” and might cause stomache.
